Markku Leskelä, SVP Development at Metsä Board and a member of 4evergreen’s steering group, what benefits will the 4evergreen guideline offer the packaging industry?

4evergreen guideline simplifies the process of choosing materials when designing a packaging. It also provides simple and clear guidance, that enables the packaging industry to increase the volume of fibre-based packaging that can be recycled over and over again. It is 4evergreen’s aim to raise the overall recycling rate of fibre-based packaging to 90% by 2030.

Designing for recycling has traditionally been a difficult process, with different guidelines and different thoughts about which materials are recyclable in which country – it has meant that designers have to consider so many different pieces of information, which is no longer the case.

Without collaboration, the guideline wouldn’t represent such a monumental step for the industry. This guideline represents the best of what the industry knows about designing fibre-based packaging for recycling, and together we can make a far greater contribution than we can as individual companies – this is the value of collaboration forums like 4evergreen.

Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director EMEA and APAC, what impact will the guideline have on Metsä Board’s approach to develop new packaging solutions?

Metsä Board’s packaging design team provides inspiration and guidance to our customers and advises how to best use our materials. Sustainability and easy recyclability of the packaging are always starting points for our team.

The guideline provides now a common handbook supporting us and our customers to create new, fresh fibre solutions that are designed for easy recycling from the beginning.
