Safety isn’t just a single decision or action – it’s a continuous commitment that each person makes to themselves, their colleagues, and the entire work community. This means making responsible choices every day, whether it's about using the correct protective equipment, anticipating hazards, or assessing risks in the workplace.

"Together, we can create a workplace where everyone feels safe and valued. This isn’t just essential; it’s the foundation for sustainable success," says Virva Juhola, SVP, Sawn Timber Production.

A shared commitment to continuous safety development

Improving safety is an ongoing process that requires commitment, openness, and collaboration from everyone.

"Safety is an evolving process where every small action can make a difference. We must continuously learn, share information, proactively identify risks, and support each other in promoting safety," says Mikko Nieminen, SVP, Pulp Production.

At the beginning of 2024, safety management training was launched across Metsä Group, aimed at enhancing the ability to address dangerous work practices and foster a proactive safety culture. These trainings also cover the responsibilities and duties under the occupational safety and health act, emphasizing personal commitment.

The training is primarily aimed at production supervisors, white-collar employees, shop stewards and health & safety representatives. As part of the training, participants make their own personal safety promises, highlighting their commitment to improving safety.

The management team leads by example

Metsä Fibre’s management team members have also made personal safety promises and are committed to implementing them in their daily work. By setting an example, they demonstrate that each of them plays a role the continuous improvement of safety and that a safety culture is built through actions, not just words.

"Our entire leadership team has made personal safety promises. It’s important for us to lead by example and promote a safety culture throughout the organization," says CEO Ismo Nousiainen.
