Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, has signed an agreement with Caverion Teollisuus on the electrical and ICT installations of the world’s most modern sawmill, to be built in Rauma.
The contract includes all electrical installations of the building technology, including electrical installations of building technology that are part of the overall project, such as electricity supply, lighting, communications, fire alarm and safety lighting installations, along with all the necessary materials. The project will employ approximately 20 Caverion Teollisuus installers.
“We want the best professionals and experts in our field to be partners in building Rauma’s new pine sawmill. Metsä Fibre has had a long-running partnership with Caverion Teollisuus, so we are very familiar with each other’s working practices. It is important for the Rauma sawmill project that our partner is committed to the project’s safety, quality and scheduling goals,” says Project Director Harri Haapaniemi.
“It’s great to be able to apply the expertise of Caverion’s professionals to this project, which is the largest sawmill investment ever made in Finland. Caverion is Finland’s largest company for industrial maintenance and technical systems, and through our diverse range of services we can participate in large and demanding projects,” says Elina Engman, Head of Division in Industrial Solutions at Caverion Teollisuus.
Work on Metsä Fibre’s Rauma sawmill construction site is proceeding as planned and on schedule. Work on laying the foundations started about six months ago at the construction site. The first equipment installations started at the kiln drying department in January 2021.
The degree of Finnish origin at the construction site for the Rauma sawmill is high – around 70 per cent – and the construction phase employs 1,500 people.
Metsä Fibre is building the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma. The value of the investment is approximately EUR 200 million, and the annual production of the new unit will be approximately 750,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber. The new sawmill will be a worldwide forerunner in technology and efficiency. For example, using machine vision and artificial intelligence in different stages of the sawing process is a significant new development. Similar technology is not yet in use anywhere in the sawmill industry.
Metsä Group is one of Caverion’s industrial partnership customers. Caverion has a joint venture with Metsä Fibre, Botnia Mill Service, which is responsible for the maintenance of Metsä Fibre’s pulp mills.
