Metsä High Yield Bleached Chemi-Thermo Mechanical Pulp

Metsä High Yield branded Bleached Chemi-Thermo Mechanical Pulp (BCTMP) is used to make our High Yield TENSILE, BULK, and SUPER BULK products. We produce them at Metsä Board’s pulp mills in Kaskinen and Joutseno, Finland, as part of Metsä Group’s operations.

Pulp processing for enhanced paper brightness and stiffness

Metsä High Yield pulp’s high yield, bulk, brightness, and paper technical properties are achieved through the chemi-thermomechanical process, which combines chemical and mechanical pulping. First, the wood chips are treated with chemicals to separate the lignin and fibres. Then, the softened wood chips are ground to maximize fibre recovery. This helps retain the high yield and stiffness compared to traditional chemical pulping methods. The final desired brightness is achieved through bleaching at the end of the process.

Metsä High Yield pulp is used as a raw material in specialty paper manufacturing to achieve higher stiffness and brightness.

Responsible chemi-thermomechanical pulping

Unlike traditional ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) pulps produced by chemical pulping, Metsä High Yield is produced using a customised TCF (Total Chlorine Free) bleaching method, which employs alternative, environmentally friendly bleaching chemicals. This supports our sustainability goals. The materials and side streams from the pulping process are recovered to produce other bioproducts and energy. The wood we use is traceable and comes from sustainably managed forests.

Tailor-made BCTMP product portfolio

Our TENSILE and SUPER BULK pulp products are made from hardwood (birch) and softwood (spruce), while our BULK product consists of only hardwood. Each Metsä High Yield pulp has excellent properties and is customised for specific end uses. Our high bulk BULK product is designed for printing and writing papers and boards, while our SUPER BULK product is ideal for premium bulk properties in board and printing paper applications. For applications requiring high strength, such as tissue and specialty papers, our TENSILE pulp is the perfect choice.
