Driving sustainability through certified management systems

At Metsä Fibre, we use our management systems to effectively assess our performance and continuously improve our operations. They also help us to achieve our strategic objectives, improve our key performance indicators, enhance our sustainability performance, and manage operational risks.

Continuous quality improvement

We aim to improve our operations on a continuous basis. We support this aim with certified management systems such as quality, environmental, energy efficiency, and safety systems. The Chain of Custody systems we use enable us to trace the origins of the wood used by Metsä Fibre and to monitor our logistics chain.

FSC®, PEFC and ISO

We proudly hold FSC® or PEFC certifications (FSC-C002102, PEFC/02-33-21), along with adherence to the ISO-system.

Annual external audits validate that our practices ensure a determined pursuit of operational excellence. Additionally, our Chain of Custody systems (FSC-C014476 and PEFC/02-31-03) meticulously trace the origins of all wood we have used, providing transparency across our logistics chain.

Forest certification is more than just a symbol – it’s a promise. It assures our customers that our wood-based materials and products originate from sustainably managed forests. 95 per cent of the wood we use (in 2023) bears certification under the the international forest standards of FSC® of PEFC (FSC-C002102, PEFC/02-33-21). Furthermore, all the wood we receive meets the rigid criteria for controlled wood (PEFC Controlled Sources, FSC Controlled Wood).

Pulp sheets

Certified management systems for pulp and other bioproducts

Metsä Fibre produces fresh fibre pulp that is both pure and suitable for use in food-contact products. This means that nothing that is hazardous to human health is transferred to the food, and contact with packaging materials made of pure pulp do not change the taste, smell, or composition of food.

To achieve this, we systematically monitor our processes at the mills and carefully evaluate the chemicals we use. Our pulp mills adhere to the ISO 22000 food safety system, which encompasses the principles of due diligence.

The certificates on the right column validate the management systems employed in the production of pulp, biochemicals and bioenergy across our Joutseno, Kemi, Rauma and Äänekoski mills in Finland. Additionally, you will find links to the certified management systems for Metsä Board's Husum and Kaskinen pulp mills.
