Capture of biogenic carbon dioxide

STARTING DATE: February 13, 2024

In this project, we are studying, together with technology company ANDRITZ, the integration of a large-scale carbon dioxide capture system to a bioproduct mill. The model mill is Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland. The aim is to assess the techno-economic feasibility of such an integrated system, and to dive into, especially, identifying the optimal size of such a recovery system. In this context, we will, among other things, determine what would be the most energy efficient concept, as well as the cooling and logistical requirements of the system.

In 2025, after the desk-top assessment has been completed, the project will proceed to a piloting phase, executed at Metsä Group’s mill area in Rauma, Finland.
