During years 2020-2024 Metsä Group and Fortum hosted a R&D collaboration and an innovation ecosystem to accelerate the development of sustainable bioproducts, supported by a grant from Business Finland. The total volume of this 4-year initiative was over EUR 130 million. Metsä Spring coordinated this collaboration scheme on behalf of Metsä Group and also carried out R&D related to sustainable textile fibres, 3D fibre products and biocomposites on its own and jointly with Metsä Fibre, Metsä Board and Fortum within the programme. The ambition of ExpandFibre was to meet the growing demands for sustainable textile fibres and other added value biomaterials. From September 2024 onwards ExpandFibre is in Transition Phase, hosted by Metsä Group, moving towards other ways of working and next generation of ecosystems.
