Our construction phase is nearing completion, and we are ready to enter an intense period of receiving and installing the equipment. One of the most exciting elements of this phase is the installation of one of the world’s largest Yankee cylinders – which is heart of our new paper machine. A Yankee is a massive rotating drying cylinder used to dry paper during the production process. Once operational in the second half of 2025, the mill will be more energy-efficient and significantly reduce our water consumption.
Fully automated logistics solution
Another exciting topic is our new automated logistics solution. This solution not only enhances operational reliability and efficiency but also eliminates many of the risks previously associated with manual transport of heavy rolls and pallets.
Energy efficiency and sustainability
Water and energy consumption are two significant challenges in the paper industry but also opportunities for us to become better and more efficient. At Mariestad, we have set ambitious targets to improve our environmental performance and minimize our impact on the surrounding environment. We aim to diminish our water usage by half compared to previous processes. This is mainly made possible through more efficient water use on the paper machine and an investment in water reuse in our treatment plant.
Energy performance is also an area where we are making substantial progress. With the new paper machine, we anticipate reducing our energy consumption by 30 percent. Additionally, we have prepared our new paper machine for the future possibility of operating entirely without propane, an important milestone in our journey in our ambition to achieve fossil-free production by 2030.
A key to a higher operational reliability and a better working environment
Automation isn’t just about machines – it’s also about how we integrate technology with people. Recent advancements in digitalization for the manufacturing industry offers great opportunities that we intend to leverage. We have invested in a unified automation system for all parts of the new mill.
One of our main focus areas is creating a centralized situation room, where all our digital systems are gathered, along with a unique software system to visualize our processes. This kind of visualisation and digitalisation allows both production and office workers to have a clear overview of the mills operations and to make fact-based decisions.
An integrated mill for the future
By utilising the best technology available for our new paper machine, logistics solution, and converting facility, we will ensure full capability in our equipment to achieve our ambitious goals.
With all these improvements, innovations, and ambitions, we are preparing Mariestad mill for the future – not only to produce high-quality tissue papers for the Scandinavian market with our consumer brands Lambi and Serla, and for the professional customers with our Katrin brand, but to do so in a way that is better for both people and the environment.
We have challenges ahead, but with a fantastic team and full support from our organization, I am confident we will reach the finish line and deliver a world-class tissue paper mill. I feel proud to be part of this unique project.
