Some of the major contributors to lowering the CO2 emissions have been the several millions of euros of investments in new energy forms at our mills, like switching to fossil free energy, the transition of Mänttä mill from peat use to renewable wood fuels and Kreuzau mill from the use of coal to wood pellets. These measures are part of Metsä Tissue’s value proposition, of which the customers also benefit from.

Metsä Tissue is now extending its climate targets to cover also the Scope 3, (value chain) emissions, committing to a total greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target of 50% by 2030. This exceeds the IPCC’s minimum requirement of a 43% reduction and aligns with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. The extended target is set to gear more attention towards the whole value chain’s emissions, in addition to the very ambitious targets of reducing the CO2 emissions in the company’s nine mills to zero by 2030.

Metsä Tissue’s GHG target elements

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from own operations, such as fuel combustion in company-owned facilities  – reduce CO2 emissions by 100% by 2030 (reduce all greenhouse gas emissions by 99%)
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, and steam – reduce CO2 emissions by 100% by 2030 (reduce all greenhouse gas emissions by 99%)
  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions occurring in our value chain, such as those from suppliers, transportation, end-of-life (reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% by 2030)

The key activities to meet these targets include transitioning to renewable fuels in the mills (Scope 1),  procuring fossil-free electricity and heat for the mills (scope 2) and  reducing fuel- and energy-related emissions by continuing with our fossil-free mills ambition, collaborating with our suppliers to lower emissions, and transitioning to biofuels in our transportations (Scope 3) by 2030.

“Since 2018 we have been on a systematic path towards our ambitious emission reduction targets, as well as our other 2030 targets. So far we have already achieved over 40 per cent reduction in our combined Scope 1 and 2 targets, and also made good progress in other areas of our sustainability KPIs, including the social and governance topics”, says Johanna Kesti, SVP Marketing, Communications and Sustainability, Metsä Tissue.

Kesti concludes: “Our intention is to contribute positively to our customers’ value chain emissions, which are highly dependent on their suppliers’ reduction actions. We believe that we can create significant value both to our customers and to the end users of our tissue products, when talking about daily necessity products. The best impacts can be created in collaboration with the most ambitious customers and suppliers”.

Metsä Tissue’s greenhouse gas target has been assured as part of Metsä Group’s CSRD aligned sustainability report 2024 by external auditor, ensuring alignment with internationally recognized standards.
