Jani Sillanpää began the event by sharing the background to the mill extension project.
“Premium tissue papers made from pure fresh fibres and produced close to the markets plays an important role in our company strategy. In addition to the demand for high quality tissue products, our focus on fresh fibre production is also a result of the continuous decline in the availability and quality of recycled fibres. We believe than an investment in the production of fresh fibre tissue products is the most sustainable solution for the future”, said Jani Sillanpää before introducing the next topic and speaker Esa Paavolainen.
Project Director Esa Paavolainen presented a brief recap of the investment project:
● Producing the leading tissue paper brands in Scandinavia, Lambi, Serla and Katrin
● The planned investment amounts to approximately SEK 2.5 billion
● Doubling the mill’s production capacity of tissue papers from 70 000 to 145 000 tons a year
● Between 50 to 100 permanent new jobs created
Paavolainen continued his presentation by sharing the latest developments in the project, highlighting the advancements in the detailed design of the new extension parts, the technical processes and the environmental permit process. He stated that the final environmental permit is expected to come in the beginning of 2022 and emphasized the magnitude and the importance of the project:
“We are very proud of this project, which would result in a major investment in Mariestad and would be one of the biggest investments in the history of Metsä Tissue. We would create many new jobs, develop future tissue technology that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and we would be able to better meet the demand for premium tissue paper products in Scandinavia", concluded Esa Paavolainen.
