Cavero 40 - Innovative multi-storey construction with Kerto-Ripa technology

Cavero 40 is a wooden residential building located in Madrid, Spain. The building has a four-storey structure that stands out for its innovative use of wood. It's notable for being the first building of its size and magnitude in the Iberian area to be entirely constructed from wood. The interior design of the building incorporates exposed Kerto® LVL based Medgon Ripa elements, creating an inviting atmosphere that pays homage to traditional craftsmanship while embracing modern architecture. The structure of the building has been industrialised by Medgon.

847 tons of wood

Cavero 40 building was constructed by using 847 tons of wood of which over 60 tons were Kerto LVL products. Kerto LVL T-studs form the load-bearing structure of timber-framed walls, while Kerto LVL S-beams were used in floor and roof structures together with Kerto LVL Q-panels to form strong Kerto-Ripa elements. The building also includes a wooden elevator shaft made with CLT, which demonstrates how wood can be applied in modern construction practices.

Metsä Wood supplied tailored sized Kerto LVL beams (51x225 and 45x225 mm) to meet the specific requirements of the project. This tailored approach ensures that the materials were used efficiently and effectively in the construction process. The construction was able to achieve material efficiency by selecting various Kerto LVL products in order to maximize their individual benefits. This approach enhanced the overall structural performance.

Smart Kerto-Ripa® elements

Kerto-Ripa technology is based on the use of Kerto S-beams and Kerto Q-panels to make material-efficient, strong and at the same time light and hollow wooden elements. It is an ideal solution for both floors and roofs.

Both Kerto Q-panels and Kerto S-beams are made to be easy to handle off-site and the complete system ensures an extremely tough and resistant structure. There is even a swimming pool on one the upper floors of the building, and the Kerto LVL beams under the pool area can withstand the weight. This demonstrates the strength and load-bearing capabilities of the Kerto LVL materials used in the construction.
