How are summer employees selected at Metsä Group?

In each of our units and wood procurement districts, HR and the  recruiting managers review the applications for the unit in question and invite the most potential applicants to an interview. We begin conducting interviews and making selections already before the application period ends.

For summer jobs, we mainly recruit students who are studying fields related to the job in question. We recruit students mainly from vocational schools, universities  and universities of applied sciences.

We appreciate summer job experience from previous years, but we also hire students at the early stages of studies, even with no previous work experience.

As a rule, our summer employees must be at least 18 years old.

From what fields does Metsä Group hire students for summer jobs?

Metsä Group offers summer jobs for students in various fields. Most of the jobs are in production and maintenance and in wood supply and forest management services. This means that most of our summer employees are students of technology or forestry. In addition to production process, engineering students are also offered various specialist jobs in fields such as technical marketing, technical customer service, product safety, technology, and research and development.

We also hire students from other domains, such as business, economy and IT for jobs in sales, marketing, ICT and finance, for example. We have tens of summer jobs in various specialist roles.

Minor subject studies and previous summer work experience can also influence selections.

Descriptions of the jobs and duties can be found on our website under Summer Jobs.

How do you contact the applicants to be interviewed?

We usually contact the applicants we invite to an interview by phone. We recommend that you are available when summer job selections are underway (listen to any messages in their voicemail and respond to requests to call back). For other matters, we usually send email to applicants from our recruitment system.

  6. 6

Where will the interviews be conducted? Is it necessary to travel to the location?

The interviews are conducted either at the recruiting unit or by a Teams meeting, especially if the applicant lives far away from the unit. Some of our units may also organise group interviews.

  7. 7

When are the interviewed persons informed of the selections?

We aim to inform our selections as soon as possible after the interview. In some cases, the decisions are made already at the end of the interview. All interviewed candidates s are always notified personally.

  8. 8

When do summer job periods start, and how long do they last?

Our summer employees in production, wood supply and forest management services usually begin working in April or early May, but an earlier start is also possible. If you have exams or other studies that require your presence in April or May, we aim to be flexible with work shifts. Usually the summer jobs in production finish by the end of August or September.

In office work, the beginning and duration of summer jobs can most of the time be agreed with the summer employee.

On the application form we ask  the possible start and end date.

  9. 9

Why do Metsä Group’s summer employee selections stretch long into the spring?

Metsä Group has more than 20 mills and sawmills and 14 wood procurement districts in Finland for which we hire summer employees. Some of our units hire dozens of summer employees, which means it takes more time to review the applications and make the selections. Sometimes applicants who have been selected for a job decide to withdraw, and then we look for another applicant instead.

We aim to notify all the applicants as early as possible. The units usually make their final decisions by mid-April at the latest but often decisions are made already in March or even before in some cases.
