Wood is the main raw material for all of our products. Metsä Forest is responsible for wood supply for the Group, and wood supply is its core business operation. We cooperate closely with wood suppliers and harvesting contractors and promote sustainable forestry through training and cooperation with stakeholders.
In 2023, in addition to wood purchases, Metsä Group made other purchases in addition towod supply totalling nearly four billion euros from roughly 13,000 suppliers. We mainly use European suppliers and aim to use local suppliers where possible. Clearly most of our purchases come from suppliers located in countries where we have production sites, and our purchases from high risk countries are very low.
Our sourcing and logistics organization consists of more than 100 professionals, and our SVP, Sourcing and Logistics, is part of Metsä Group Sustainability Process Management Team. Targets and roadmaps related to the sustainability of the supply chain are reviewed by the Sustainability Process Management Team. Our target is for all our suppliers to be sustainable and that 100% of the raw materials used would be traceable

Requirements for suppliers
Our vision is to be the preferred partner in developing sustainable business. This can only be achieved by having a network of responsible business partners. Our suppliers also play an important role in achieving our sustainability 2030 targets. We follow each target regularly and will prioritize suppliers who commit to the targets.
All suppliers are required to operate responsibly in accordance with the principles of Metsä Group Supplier Code of Conduct and to regularly participate in our supplier assessments and audits. Suppliers are also encouraged to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets and we recommend commitment to Science Based Targets initiative.
We encourage our raw material and packaging suppliers to find alternatives to fossil based raw materials in order to support our target for fossil free raw materials. These suppliers are also required to disclose the origin of raw materials to ensure traceability of raw materials.
