Companies face a multidisciplinary and hard-to-model world where their advocacy work is often more reactive than proactive due to various variables. Researchers' models, on the other hand, usually work best with certain assumptions and limited decision-making situations. As the holistic nature of the operating environment increases, the explanatory power of the models decreases. Decision makers too rarely receive proactive, comprehensive and multidisciplinary solutions for the preparation of policies and regulation, even if they would be desirable in their position. Would this be a place for closer collaboration?

We can do better and present more comprehensive initiatives and proposals that our decision makers deserve. The solution is in strengthening the cooperation between different actors and the scientific community and proactively presenting the benefits of collaboration.

We should be able to make better use of business’ strong practical expertise and the multidisciplinary nature and independence of the scientific community. It would also be essential to enhance cooperation between different administrative sectors.

Now is the right time to strengthen cooperation, when the new EU decision-makers develop policies and regulations affecting companies and agree on the priorities of their term of office. Metsä Group’s regenerative forestry initiative is an excellent example of such collaboration. Metsä Group wants to verifiably strengthen the state of Finnish nature by 2030. We invite the scientific community and wider stakeholders to participate in this work. In order to promote collaboration, Metsä Group will publish its position papers and views on the company's website. We want to stimulate discussion and enhance collaboration in a transparent way, while at the same time highlighting the need for more comprehensive solutions to the decision makers.

Let's look at the world in a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary way and work more closely together. In this way we can create an enabling operating environment for companies which benefits the society in large. Diversity is not only important in nature, but it is also a key element in better regulation.
