The change negotiations concerning the Merikarvia sawmill of Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, which began in January, have ended. After the change negotiations, the company decided to close down the operations of the Merikarvia sawmill by the end of June 2024.
The negotiations concerned all 79 employees of the sawmill. The negotiations covered the reasons for the closure of the sawmill, the possible substantial and permanent reduction in work resulting from the planned closure and the necessary personnel arrangements. Efforts will be made to offer the permanent personnel of the Merikarvia sawmill jobs in other production plants where possible, and decisions on dismissals will be taken by 30 June 2024.
"The Merikarvia sawmill has reached the end of its technical service life, which is why we’re closing down its operations," says Ismo Nousiainen, Metsä Fibre’s CEO.
The annual production capacity of the Merikarvia sawmill is approximately 220,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber. The sawmill uses about 455,000 cubic metres of wood annually.
